Be the first to carry your “wife” and run across the finish line and win her weight in Carlsberg beer!

In days gone by, if a man wanted a wife from a neighbouring village there was no social networking or internet dating, he had to go and take her! From this show of worthiness and determination, enforced by one particular band of Finns, evolved the Wife Carrying Contest.

Originally this event only existed in Finland, but word has spread, and now countries all over the world host their own Wife Carrying Championships. Already registered for this year’s World Wife Carrying Championship held in Finland are teams from Finland (of course), Estonia, Canada Australia, USA, Russia, Ireland, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates – it is truly becoming a world-wide phenomenon!

The most important and redeeming feature of the whole race though is the prize – the wife’s weight in beer generously donate by Carlsberg Lager – awarded to the team that completes the course the fastest.

If there are spots still available in the contest on the festival weekend, you will be able to register at the Midsummer Festival.
